About the speaker
Estella Carpi is an Associate Professor at UCL, specializing in Humanitarian Studies. As a social anthropologist, she has developed her research in interdisciplinary environments and in territories marked by crises, namely in the Levant and Turkey, with a focus on social responses to conflict-induced humanitarian assistance.
Over the past decade, her research has addressed topics such as identity politics in crisis settings, the anthropology of the state and humanitarianism, as well as the intersection between social assistance and emergency aid. She is currently a member of the Global Young Academy (2020-2025), where she co-directed the At-Risk Scholars initiative between 2021 and 2023.
Estella Carpi is also the author of several works, including the book Politics of Crisis-Making: Forced Displacement and Cultures of Assistance in Lebanon (Indiana University Press, 2023), which explores the dynamics of humanitarian assistance in the Lebanese context.
An Opportunity for Critical Reflection and Learning
The event will offer participants the chance to explore the urban and social transformations in three countries of the Levant region - Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan - as a consequence of the displacement of Syrian populations, promoting reflection on “urbanitarian” dynamics and the challenges associated with humanitarian assistance in crisis contexts.
