Learning Outcomes

The goals of this course are:
1) the conceptual framework focusing on the social construction of health, illness and functionality and its implications for social work;
2) the systematization and analysis of social policies in the areas of health and rehabilitation;
3) the coordination of the issues facing the dynamics of social reality and the professional skills of social workers in the field of social work health and rehabilitation in different contexts;
4) the analysis of social problems and facing challenges in social work in the areas of health care and rehabilitation, in different contexts;
5) the analysis of professional intervention strategies of the social worker in the health and rehabilitation area in different contexts;
6) the analysis around challenges in the areas of Social Work in Health care and Rehabilitation.

I - The social construction of health, disease and functionality: Implications for Social Work.
      1. Concepts of Health, Disease and functionality.
      2. Health Models: from the biomedical to the holistic.
      3. Social determinants of illness/dependency.
II - The Health and Rehabilitation Policy in Portugal
      1. Characteristics and current structure of the Portuguese Health System.
      2. The National Health Service and health policies
      3. Rights and duties of the user and the patient in Portugal
      4. Structure and mission of the National Institute for Rehabilitation.
      5. International organizations
III - Social Impacts of illness and dependency
      1. The impact of the disease and dependency on the patient, the family, social networks and caregivers
      2. The impact of the disease and dependency at socio-professional and socio-economic level.
IV. History of social work in health care in Portugal.
V -. Social Work in the Health: theoretical, methodological, functional and normative framework.
