2nd Conference of the III Cycle on Investigation and Security: “Actionable Knowledge” in climate adaptation
ISMT promotes an online conference dedicated to the integration of scientific knowledge into decision-making in climate adaptation contexts.
The Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (ISMT), through the Postgraduate Programme in Investigation and Security Against Disasters, Crises, and Accidents, will hold the second conference of its III Conference Cycle on the 21st of May 2026, at 18:00. The session, themed “Actionable Knowledge” for decision-making in climate adaptation areas, takes place in an online format and is accessible via the Zoom platform https://zoom.us/j/4132980484
The session features the participation of Maria Carmen Lemos, a lecturer in Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan, in the United States of America. The speaker will address the articulation between science, politics, and society, focusing on the use of scientific information in response to climate change and extreme events such as droughts and floods. The opening and moderation of the conference will be led by Noémia Salgado Cunha, scientific coordinator of the postgraduate programme, while the commentary will be provided by Cristina Mendonça, postgraduate lecturer and coordinator of the Forensic Intervention in Disasters Unit of the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences.
Maria Carmen Lemos holds a PhD in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and focuses her research on the concept of "actionable knowledge". Throughout her career, she has held teaching and research positions at institutions such as Arizona University and Oxford University, authoring publications in the field and contributing to the chapter on climate resilience of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the U.S. National Climate Assessment (NCA4). Participation in this event is open to all those interested in the study and policies of risk governance.
