The integration process into the University of Coimbra and the expansion to the city's Baixa mark a new phase of institutional development for the Instituto Superior Miguel Torga.

The University of Coimbra and the Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (ISMT) are preparing a joint future. The rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão, revealed that he has the mandate from the General Council to study the integration of ISMT into the university. This measure was communicated during a press conference that brought together Helena Teodósio, president of the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region, Ana Abrunhosa, mayor of Coimbra, and Manuel Castelo Branco, president of ISMT.

For the president of ISMT, Manuel Castelo Branco, this decision brings benefits to the city, the region, and both institutions. The progressive integration will enable the development of a regional university platform focused on public innovation, municipal staff training, and applied research on territorial issues. The transition will provide the student community and teaching staff with broader access to research centres, international networks, pedagogical resources, and social services, projecting the institution's historical identity onto a larger scale with greater scientific density.

In parallel, ISMT will expand its teaching activities to the Baixa of Coimbra, occupying former bank facilities provided by the municipality, with entrances on Rua Ferreira Borges and Praça do Comércio. Classes in these new spaces will begin in the 2026-2027 academic year. The Celas campus will remain operational, centralising the Directorate and Academic Services. The connection between the two spaces will be ensured by the new Mondego Mobility System, allowing for travel times of five to ten minutes.
