Manuel Menezes, a lecturer at the Miguel Torga Higher Institute (ISMT), is part of the recent publication ‘Networks and Partnerships in Territories and Municipalities: Intercultural Mediation and Social Intervention’, published by Afrontamento. The book, coordinated by a group of researchers, brings together contributions that highlight the importance of intercultural mediation in building fairer and more inclusive communities.
The chapter signed by Manuel Menezes focuses on the theme ‘Children at Risk and/or Danger: Participation, Dynamics and Accountability of Local Communities in their Protection’. In this text, the teacher explores and emphasises the importance of the participation and accountability of local communities in the protection of their children and young people. He reflects on the functioning of territorial partnerships, networking and, consequently, the involvement of the different entities/services/organisations present in the territory in terms of the promotion and protection of children at risk, with the aim of preventing and consolidating a right that all children have, i.e. the right to the community.
The publication also emphasises the importance of networks and partnerships in developing local projects that promote intercultural coexistence and citizen participation. The texts compiled in the book underline the complexity of relationships between different social actors and the need to adopt approaches based on active listening and constructive dialogue.
The authors argue that intercultural mediation is a crucial tool for combating social inequalities, fostering diversity and encouraging the active participation of citizens, thus strengthening the social fabric and local development.
The Miguel Torga Higher Institute has established itself as a benchmark in the social sciences and humanities. The presence of teaching staff at leading scientific events and the publication of academic papers demonstrate ISMT's commitment to the production of knowledge and the training of qualified professionals who are prepared to respond to the challenges of a constantly changing world.
