On the evening of 11 December 2024, the Miguel Torga Higher Institute (ISMT) held its traditional Christmas Dinner, a moment of fraternisation and celebration, at the D. Dinis Cultural Centre in Coimbra. The event brought together students, teachers, staff, institutional partners and representatives of local organisations, strengthening ties between the academic community and the region.
The celebration began with a performance by Tânia Fonseca, coordinator of the Tuna Real Torga Reinstallation Committee, followed by speeches that emphasised the importance of ISMT as a benchmark institution in higher education.
Outstanding speeches
Rui Morais, President of the ISMT Students' Association, highlighted the sense of belonging and community that characterises the institute, stressing the importance of keeping alive the memories and stories that unite all its members. ‘What isn't talked about runs the risk of being forgotten,’ he emphasised.
Manuel Castelo Branco, Chairman of the ISMT Board of Directors, reinforced the idea that the institute is a true academic family. He thanked the representatives of various organisations for their presence and highlighted the cooperation with Coimbra City Council, the Santo António dos Olivais Parish Council and the Coimbra Region Intermunicipal Community (CIM-RC). ‘This is a moment that celebrates the cohesion and strength of our institute,’ he said.
Representing the CIM-RC, João Miguel Henriques, Mayor of Vila Nova de Poiares, praised the ISMT's crucial role in regional development. ‘We recognise the tremendous potential of this institution due to its history, human heritage and capacity to intervene in the territory,’ he said, renewing the CIM's commitment to supporting the institute's growth.
Francisco Rodeiro, President of the Santo António dos Olivais Parish Council, stressed the council's willingness to collaborate closely with the ISMT, considering it a fundamental pillar for the parish and the city of Coimbra. ‘The council is open to establishing protocols that contribute to enhancing this institution,’ he said.
Closing the speeches, José Manuel Silva, Mayor of Coimbra, emphasised the importance of ISMT in the local, regional and national context. He referred to the institute as an essential element in the city's attractiveness, contributing to economic, social and cultural growth. ‘The Miguel Torga Higher Institute is one of our benchmark higher education institutions, and the work carried out here is crucial for the future of Coimbra and the region,’ he concluded.

The ISMT Christmas Dinner reaffirmed the institution's values of unity, co-operation and commitment to the academic community and the region. It was also an opportunity to renew good wishes and express hope for a future of growth and success for the Miguel Torga Higher Institute.
