The Fertility Awareness Project is an initiative developed by Fertility Europe and national associations in Bulgaria, Norway, Poland and, in the case of Portugal, the Portuguese Fertility Association, to respond to infertility problems and Europe's demographic decline.

This European study suggests that young Portuguese consider their knowledge of reproductive health to be limited, but are keen to learn more. Reproductive health should therefore be included in secondary school curricula in Portugal.

The results, which will be presented at the European Parliament in March, contain relevant data for public policies to increase reproductive health literacy.

According to Ana Galhardo, psychologist, researcher and lecturer at the Miguel Torga Higher Institute, the subject of fertility should be included in curricula not only as an educational measure, but also as a tool for young Portuguese to be able to have the children they want with autonomy.

The study also points out that it is essential to educate teenagers of both sexes about fertility and the factors that affect it, namely those related to lifestyle: alcohol and tobacco consumption, drugs, physical exercise, obesity or underweight and sexually transmitted infections.
