Description
Social Service is an intervention profession and an academic discipline in the area of Social Sciences. The degree in Social Work in ISMT was founded in 1937, being one of the two pioneer degrees in Portugal.
The growing complexity of society requires that the training of social workers ensure skills of analysis, understanding and intervention informed by interdisciplinarity in the field of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and guided by the principles of social justice, human rights, diversity and collective responsibility. The degree intends to contribute to the construction of a professional identity, guaranteeing a solid theoretical, methodological and ethical-political qualification, and a capacity for intervention and investigation.
The study plan lasts for 7 semesters and has curricular units organized into four training axes: 1) Fundamentals and theories that ground Social Work; 2) Theoretical-methodological dimension; 3) Relationship between Social Work and social policy in different areas; 4) Technical-operative dimension of socialization with the social and institutional reality of insertion of Social Work and pre-professional practice. The fourth axis includes Internships I and II, which are supervised internships lasting 2 semesters.
